Most of us don’t think much about what actually happens during a dental cleaning. You show up and sit in the chair. You open wide. And somehow, an hour later, your teeth feel squeaky clean. But have you ever wondered what we’re actually doing in there? What’s with all those metal tools? Why does it take so long? And why does it sometimes feel like your hygienist is scraping forever?

We get it. A little mystery can make anything feel intimidating. So let’s pull back the curtain and walk through exactly what happens during a routine cleaning at our Owings Mills office.

What Happens During a Routine Dental Cleaning in Owings Mills, MD

Step 1: The Welcome and Health Check

First we get you settled in. You’ll sit back in one of our comfortable chairs, and we’ll ask how you’ve been doing.

But we’re not just making small talk. Your hygienist will review your health history and ask about anything new since your last visit. New medications? Changes in your overall health? Any nagging tooth pain or sensitivity?

This matters more than you might think. Things like diabetes, pregnancy, or new prescriptions can affect your oral health. We want the full picture.

Step 2: The Physical Exam

Before we start cleaning, your hygienist will take a good look inside your mouth. We’re checking for any obvious issues: swollen gums, sores, loose teeth, or other concerns.

We’ll also use a tiny instrument called a periodontal probe. It looks like a little metal ruler with a blunt end. We gently measure the spaces between your teeth and gums. Pockets that are too deep can be an early sign of gum disease.

Don’t worry. This doesn’t hurt. It’s just a quick check.

Step 3: The Scaling

Here’s where the real work of a dental cleaning begins. You know that sticky film that forms on your teeth by the end of the day? That’s plaque. If you don’t brush it away, it hardens into tartar. Tartar is rough, yellow, and you can’t remove it with a toothbrush. Only a dental professional can scrape it off.

We use special metal tools, scalers and curettes, to gently remove tartar from above and below your gumline. You’ll hear scraping sounds. You might feel some pressure. But if you’re comfortable, it shouldn’t actually hurt.

If you’re nervous, just let us know. We can go at your pace, take breaks, or use numbing gel if needed.

Step 4: The Polish

Once your teeth are tartar-free, we switch to a high-powered electric toothbrush with a rubber cup on the end. We load it up with gritty toothpaste that feels a little like sand. Most people find it kind of tingly and refreshing.

This step polishes away stains and leaves your teeth smooth and shiny. And yep, that’s why they feel so amazing afterward.

Step 5: The Floss

You’d think we’d skip this since you already floss at home. But we don’t. Your hygienist will floss between every single tooth to make sure any lingering debris or plaque is gone.

This also gives us a chance to check for any spots that bleed easily. If your gums bleed during this step, it’s usually a sign they need more attention at home.

Step 6: The Rinse and Fluoride

We’ll have you rinse with water or a special mouthwash to clear away any leftover toothpaste or debris.

Most of our patients also get a fluoride treatment at the end. We paint a foamy or gel-like fluoride onto your teeth and let it sit for about a minute. It strengthens your enamel and helps prevent cavities.

Some offices skip this step for adults. We don’t. We think everyone benefits from a little extra protection.

Step 7: The Dentist’s Exam

After your hygienist finishes, one of our dentists will stop by for a quick exam. They’ll review your X-rays if we took any, check for cavities, and look at your gums.

This is your chance to ask questions too. Notice a spot that’s been bothering you? Curious about whitening? Want to talk about that chipped tooth? Now’s the time.

Step 8: The Wrap-Up

Before you leave, we’ll schedule your next cleaning and give you any home care tips. Maybe we’ll suggest an electric toothbrush. Or remind you to floss a little more gently. Whatever’s going to help you keep that fresh, clean feeling until your next visit.

That’s it. Simple, right?
